What is the USPS tracking number and where can I find it?

The tracking number or ID. is a combination of numbers (it can also have letters) that allows you to uniquely identify your shipment for national or international tracking.

Who provides me with the tracking number of the package I am waiting for?

product purchased through an online store. The seller usually includes this information in the shipping confirmation email for your order.
If you don’t have your ID. or tracking number should contact the sender or the online store.
You may locate your tracking number on your:

  • Sales receipt
  • Self-service kiosk eReceipt
  • Mailing receipt
  • Online label record, if you purchased postage online (through Click-N-Ship®, eBay, or other services)
  • Or below the barcode placed on the mailed item

Remember that postcards, First-Class Mail® letters and flats, and some USPS Marketing Mail® items may not have tracking numbers.

When is my shipment tracking information available?

Tracking events are available 24-48 hours after receiving your tracking number. You can view status updates as soon as shipments arrive at USPS facilities.

Can I track my shipment if I don’t have a tracking number?

If you are the recipient, better contact the sender of your shipment and request the tracking number.

If you are the sender, check your receipt, email, Click-N-Ship or other service you used to purchase postage online.

You may not have received a tracking number because the shipping service does not have one. Such items include: Postcards, First-Class Mail letters and flats, Periodicals, Some USPS Marketing Mail parcels.

I lost or forgot my tracking number

If you lost or forgot your tracking number, please know that local post offices and call center agents have no way to retrieve lost tracking numbers.
If the recipient is a current Informed Delivery subscriber, they will be able to see the tracking number on their dashboard.


Why doesn’t my ID work? or tracking number?

Make sure you entered your tracking number correctly and if it doesn’t work, contact the sender or check your receipt, email, Click-N-Ship or other service you used to purchase postage online. If you still have problems you can contact customer service.
